Ex-Library Official Pleads Guilty to Bribery Charges

Detroit - Jo Anne G. Mondowney, Executive Director of the Detroit Public Library (DPL), issued a statement about the guilty plea of Timothy Cromer, former Chief Administrator and Technology Officer. On Tuesday, April 15, 2014, Mr. Cromer admitted taking $1.4 million in kickbacks from DPL vendors.

“DPL’s ability to serve our community depends on the Library being a faithful steward of the fiscal trust bestowed on it by the citizens of Detroit,” stated Mrs. Mondowney. “Mr. Cromer’s unconscionable and unethical actions violated this trust. This is a sad event in the nearly 150-year history of the Library and we sincerely apologize to our community. We are committed to diligently and transparently working to ensure that the Library’s resources are used with integrity and honesty.”

Mrs. Mondowney wholeheartedly agrees with U. S. Attorney Barbara L. McQuade’s statement in an April 15 press release: Mr. Cromer’s “guilty plea to bribery charges reflects a betrayal to the honest public servants who have dedicated themselves to the Detroit Public Library and the people they serve.” DPL’s staff reaffirms its commitment to meeting the lifelong learning needs of Detroit’s residents and will continue its work to meet the changing library and information needs of the community.
